Social media is one of the biggest online marketing tools companies have to reach and connect with their customers. Social media gives companies the chance to enhance customer relationships and to communicate with them. Old-school customer service is replaced by social media customer service. These are just a few examples of the usage of social media for companies. But social media channels are also changing and it is important to know what is happening in order for companies to stay at the top in their market. I have collected 5 interesting trends that could be big in the upcoming year.
Trend 1: It is all about mobile first!
Smartphone usage is becoming more and more important and people are moving from desktop to mobile phone. The so-called mobile first strategy (Kerkhofs, 2016) is vital for companies, who have campaigns on social media. It is very important to optimize these campaigns for mobile use in order to get a good result.
Trend 2: Videos and Livestreaming
Videos are becoming more and more important for companies, because it is an easy way to express themselves and videos are a great advertising tool. Since a couple of years a new movement has arisen, namely Video Livestreaming. YouTube and Twitch are two examples of platforms that are made for live streaming videos. Now Facebook and Twitter also have live stream videos in their app (Jeff Bullas, 2016). Also 360 degree videosare becoming very popular nowadays. Trend 3: Influencers
Influencers were/are the big hype of 2016. Everywhere you looked influencers can be seen. Vloggers and Bloggers are everywhere and some of them have a large follower base. This makes them an interesting option for companies, because vlogging/blogging about a product is a great move to increase brand awareness. Expected is that Influencers will play an important part in 2017.
Trend 4: Automation is the key to success
Because social media is getting bigger and bigger companies will have trouble to handle it. Automation is the solution for this problem (Smarty, 2016). But what does automation mean? Automation means that some work is being done by bots or software programmes. One of the newest things are chatbots. Not on the website, but on social media. Companies are already trying chatbots with the help of Facebook Messenger. Also software programmes become more and more important. It provides a way for companies to automate certain processes. This is cost reducing, because you don’t need employees anymore to conduct these activities.
Certainly are there many more trends for 2017. But all these trends above are just an assumption, because we can only guess what can happen in the nearby future. Personally I am hoping for a new hype, something that is completely different. We shall see if it is going to happen ;).
