Fake stories are going to change social media and Google

Due to the recent elections in the U.S. the discussion was lighten up again. Fake stories on social media were taking over your feed and it was hardly impossible for readers to determine if the stories were real or fake. Facebook recently adapted its algorithm a few weeks ago to get rid of fake stories that became trending on Facebook (Telegraaf, 2016). After Facebook fired some important employees and the new algorithm they thought they had solved it, but with the recent elections as an example the problem still isn’t solved. During the elections several fake stories about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton popped up in the feed of many social media accounts.

Studies have shown that some fake stories actually get a higher IPMelection-campaing (Constine, 2016) (Interaction per a thousand fans) than real stories (Price, 2016). These fake stories are so-called Hoaxes and it really took over social media during the elections in the USA.

Facebook is not the only who is suffering from fake stories

As described in the title of this article not only Facebook is suffering from fake news stories. Think of Twitter where fake stories can be become trends on the social media platform. But not only the biggest social media channels are suffering from fake news stories.

Even the biggest power online namely Google is suffering from fake news stories as well. Fake stories popped up in the top search results and Google is going to change this immediately (NICK WINGFIELD, 2016). Google will not only look at the algorithm for search results, but also for the ad sense system. Rumours also have spread that Google is going to dismiss the news option in the search menu. But this is just based on rumours and most likely Google won’t do that. Changes in the ad sense system will also be very important, because Google wants that online users only get relevant content.

But?

Is this overhyped? Yes of course it is. But isn’t this what we want to read if you know what I mean. People always are looking for sensation and some other users will take advantage of that and will create such stories to feed their public. Some offline magazines are just based on such stories, because people like to read them.

Therefore I believe that even though Google and others will adapt their algorithms fake news stories will occur and will become trending. Why? Because people want it to be trending.

This is my opinion so if you don’t agree with me, no problem I would like to discuss it with you.

4 social media trends for 2017

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor social media trends 2017

Social media is one of the biggest online marketing tools companies have to reach and connect with their customers. Social media gives companies the chance to enhance customer relationships and to communicate with them. Old-school customer service is replaced by social media customer service. These are just a few examples of the usage of social media for companies. But social media channels are also changing and it is important to know what is happening in order for companies to stay at the top in their market. I have collected 5 interesting trends that could be big in the upcoming year.

Trend 1: It is all about mobile first!

Smartphone usage is becoming more and more important and people are moving from desktop to mobile phone. The so-called mobile first strategy (Kerkhofs, 2016) is vital for companies, who have campaigns on social media. It is very important to optimize these campaigns for mobile use in order to get a good result.

Trend 2: Videos and Livestreaming

Videos are becoming more and more important for companies, because it is an easy way to express themselves and videos are a great advertising tool. Since a couple of years a new movement has arisen, namely Video Livestreaming. YouTube and Twitch are two examples of platforms that are made for live streaming videos. Now Facebook and Twitter also have live stream videos in their app (Jeff Bullas, 2016). Also 360 degree videosare becoming very popular nowadays. Livestreaming could be very important in 2017 and it is an interesting option for companies to
discuss.

Trend 3: Influencers

Influencers were/are the big hype of 2016. Everywhere you looked influencers can be seen. Vloggers and Bloggers are everywhere and some of them have a large follower base. This makes them an interesting option for companies, because vlogging/blogging about a product is a great move to increase brand awareness. Expected is that Influencers will play an important part in 2017.

Trend 4: Automation is the key to successgiphy-2

Because social media is getting bigger and bigger companies will have trouble to handle it. Automation is the solution for this problem (Smarty, 2016). But what does automation mean? Automation means that some work is being done by bots or software programmes. One of the newest things are chatbots. Not on the website, but on social media. Companies are already trying chatbots with the help of Facebook Messenger. Also software programmes become more and more important. It provides a way for companies to automate certain processes. This is cost reducing, because you don’t need employees anymore to conduct these activities.

Anymore?

Certainly are there many more trends for 2017. But all these trends above are just an assumption, because we can only guess what can happen in the nearby future. Personally I am hoping for a new hype, something that is completely different. We shall see if it is going to happen ;).
